Eek.
The blogosphere seems to think this guy (and I repeat Atrios' warning: Man In Underwear) is the same as this guy, who works for this explicitly pro-GOP "news" organization with no outlets (and currently soliciting volunteer reporters!), to whom the White House has been giving press credentials.
Whoever he is, the "reporter" working under an assumed name for a news agency with no outlets gets called on virtually every day so he can repeat GOP talking points back in the form of questions.
Nice.
I clicked on the link called "where I work" but nothing loaded. Apparently WePaintTrucks.com is some sort of newspaper...
UPDATE: Curiouser and curiouser. Yesterday, apparently, Bush hugs his synthetic go-to-when-questions-get-tough human safety valve guy (saying goodbye?)...
[Correction, 2/9/05: the photo was probably not of Bush and Gannon. I apologize for the error.]
And now suddenly the "reporter" (whose authenticity the Boston Globe pretty much shredded a few days ago, and whom Media Matters openly denounced as a "fake") has taken his entire website down, with this message:
Because of the attention being paid to me I find it is no longer possible to effectively be a reporter for Talon News. In consideration of the welfare of me and my family I have decided to return to private life.
Thank you to all those who supported me.
Wow. That's the kind of sudden desperate sprint for the exit a guy usually makes when the cops have him pulled to the side of the road, there's a hundred grand of marked bills in his trunk, and the kidnapping victim tied in the backseat is starting to bang her head on the glass.
What the hell just happened? Laws broken? Just embarrassing as hell? Is Bush now going to pretend he never knew the guy? Whole thing is just bizarre...
The strange old I-used-to-paint-trucks site with the in-my-Army-underwear come-hither is still up, though. (Is that the same guy? Because he looks a lot less... um... Republican in his underwear.) Get it while it lasts, I guess.
Weird.
Talon News is still looking for volunteer reporters, by the way. Although -- and this is disappointing -- it's only a pitch for college interns to work as news writers. Not, I guess, another chance for truck painters to suddenly wind up getting cheek-to-cheek with the Chimp after helping the whole administration fake their way through press conferences.
